Many people who receive a traffic ticket just want to pay the fine to "get it over with".
However, by paying the traffic ticket fine, you are pleading guilty to the offense and giving up your right to contest the charge in district court. Depending on the offense, this guilty plea can result in severe consequences including increased insurance rates, points on your drivers license, and/or a drivers license suspension.
Amazingly, neither the cop who issues the ticket nor the court that accepts the guilty plea are required to inform the driver of these consequences.
People often plead guilty and pay the fine only to discover later that their drivers license has been suspended or their insurance rates have increased, or both. Don't fall into this trap! If you've been charged with a traffic offense in Pennsylvania or New Jersey, you have very little time to decide how to handle it.
