Philadelphia County Information

One of Pennsylvania’s three original counties, Philadelphia County was established by William Penn in 1682. Originally, the city of Philadelphia was comprised only of what is now Center City, and was one of several cities, boroughs and townships within the County of Philadelphia. In 1854, the separate municipalities within the county were merged together as one single city. In 1952, Philadelphia County government offices were merged with city offices. Since that time, for all intents and purposes, the city and county of Philadelphia are one and the same.

Philadelphia County sits along the Delaware River to the east. It borders Delaware County to the west, Montgomery County to the northwest, Bucks County to the northeast, Burlington County (NJ) to the east, Camden County (NJ) to the southeast, and Gloucester County (NJ) to the south.

Major thoroughfares include I-95 along the Delaware River, the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76, along the Schuylkill River), Route 611/Broad Street running north & south roughly through the center of the county, and Route 1 (City Avenue/Roosevelt Blvd.). Philadelphia has a transit system, SEPTA, with rail stations in Center City, 69th Street, and other parts of the city. SEPTA operates bus, regional rail, elevated trains, and subway services in Philadelphia and throughout the greater Philly area.

Philadelphia has an abundance of highly regarded colleges and universities, including the “Big Five” schools (TempleTemple, St. Joe's, La Salle, & Penn – Villanova is actually located nearby in Delaware County), Drexel, and Philadelphia University, among many others. There is one public school district with 346 public and charter schools.

Philadelphia has teams in all four major sports leagues: the Phillies of MLB, Eagles of the NFL, 76ers of the NBA, and Flyers of the NHL. Additionally, the Philadelphia Union will begin play in Major League Soccer in 2010.

There are several court locations in the city of various jurisdiction, including the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, Philadelphia Municipal Court, Philadelphia Traffic Court, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
