Montgomery County was created in 1784 out of land that had been part of Philadelphia County. It is believed to have been named either for a Revolutionary War general or for Montgomeryshire, Wales. The county seat is in Norristown.
Montgomery County borders Philadelphia and Delaware Counties to the south, Chester County to the west, Berks County to the northwest, Lehigh County to the north, and Bucks County to the northeast.
Major highways include Rt. 422, running northwest and southeast in the county from Pottstown to King of Prussia; the PA Turnpike; the Schuylkill Expressway, the Blue Route (I-476), Route 309, and Route 202.
Located in Montgomery County are the communities of Ambler, Ardmore, Audubon, Blue Bell, Bryn Mawr, Collegeville, Fort Washington, Horsham, King of Prussia, Lansdale, Montgomeryville, Norristown, Plymouth Meeting, Pottstown, Royersford, Skippack, Souderton, Willow Grove, and Wynnewood.
