Delaware County Information

Delaware County was created in 1789, when Chester County (which originally included modern-day Delaware and Chester Counties) was divided, with the southeastern portion of the county to be known as Delaware County (named for the Delaware River, which forms the county’s southeastern border with New Jersey). The county seat at Chester city was replaced in 1850 with the new and current county seat, Media Borough.

Delaware County is situated bordering Philadelphia to the east, Montgomery County to the north, Chester County to the west, New Castle County (DE) to the southwest, and Gloucester County (NJ) to the southeast. There are low-lying, flat areas in the southeastern part of the county along the Delaware River and rolling hills in the northern and western part of the county.

Major highways include I-95, which runs along the Delaware River in southern Delaware County, Rte. 476 (the “Blue Route”) running north and south in the center of the county, and a short strip of the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76) in the northern tip of the county.

The most populous municipalities in Delaware County are the City of Chester and the townships of Upper Darby, Haverford, Radnor, Ridley, Springfield, Marple, Middletown, Aston, Upper Chichester, and Nether Providence. Many county residents identify themselves as hailing not from an actual town or municipality, but from less definitive, unincorporated areas such as Ardmore, Broomall, Concordville, Drexel Hill, Garnet Valley, Glen Mills, Havertown, Newtown Square, Rosemont, Villanova, Wallingford, and Wayne.

Delaware County is home to many colleges and universities, including Villanova, Widener, Neumann, Cheyney, Eastern, Haverford College, Swarthmore College, Penn State-Brandywine, Cabrini College, and the Delaware County Community College. There are seventeen public school districts in the county.

The County seat is located in the borough of Media. Media was incorporated in 1850 and designated as the county seat, replacing the city of Chester. Media is centrally located in the county, has a small-town feel, and is America's first Fair Trade Town. Media is also home to the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas.
