Chester County Information
Chester County, along with Philadelphia and Bucks Counties, was one of the three original counties of the Pennsylvania Colony, created in 1682. Originally, Chester County was much larger than it is presently; it has since been divided up to form present-day Lancaster County, Delaware County, and part of Berks County. The original county seat was located in the city of Chester. However, when Delaware County was formed out of the eastern part of Chester County in 1789, the city of Chester was no longer within Chester County and a new county seat was established in the borough of West Chester.
Chester County is situated bordering Delaware County to the southeast, Montgomery County to the northeast, Berks County to the northwest, Lancaster County to the west, and Cecil County, MD and New Castle County, DE to the south.
Major Highways include Route 30 (Lancaster Pike/Exton Bypass/Lincoln Highway), running east to west through the middle of the county; I-76 (the PA Turnpike), running east to west across the northern part of the county; Route 1 (Baltimore Pike), cutting across southern Chester County; Route 202 in the eastern part of the county; and Route 100 running from the northern tip of the county south into Delaware.
Population centers in Chester County include the communities of West Chester, Kennett Square, Downingtown, Coatesville, Avondale, Honey Brook, Malvern, Oxford, Parkesburg, Phoenixville, Spring City, Pennsbury, Chesterbrook, Berwyn, Devon, Exton, Paoli, South Pottstown, Thorndale, and West Goshen.
There are several colleges and university in Chester County, including West Chester University, Cheyney University, Immaculata University, Lincoln University, Delaware County Community College (Exton and Downingtown campuses), and Penn State-Great Valley. There are fourteen public school districts in the county.
The county seat of Chester County is the borough of West Chester. West Chester has been the county seat since 1789, but was not incorporated as a borough until 1799. The Chester County Court of Common Pleas is located in West Chester. Currently, the Court resides in the Chester County Justice Center building, having recently been moved from the historic Chester County Courthouse.
